I recently asked this question in a poll to my Instagram and Facebook followers.

The response was almost unanimous that nobody had a clue!

So what is it?
Power Yoga is also called Yoga sculpt. It is a unique modern version of yoga which includes yoga postures with or without weights. It tones the body, is a cardio based exercise, develops real practical strength quickly, and creates flexibility.

What does a typical class look like?
My classes are held on V Studio which is an online studio specifically designed for fitness instructors. I really love it because unlike zoom all of the participants are unable to see each other. Whenever I attend online classes I find it distracting to see others. I however, can see everyone who attends my classes and can help with any posture alignment.

The classes are 1 hour, we always begin with a warm up which generally includes a yoga style sun salute. I always throw the odd curb ball ‘Ashleigh style’ to keep things exciting. We then move into fitness aspect of the class, I always ensure everyone gets nice and sweaty by pushing their own personal ability. We use either our own body weight or additional weight to add resistance to exercises. We hold positions and we flow through movements.

We then always end our classes with a super relaxing chill out, I guide you through this – always my favourite part of my session. After this you’ll be ready to climb into the shower and then your bed. Feeling stretched, strong and frankly awesome! I often find exercise requires a mindset shift at the end in order to leave you keen to make it a habit.

Why practice with me?
Not only am I an advanced yoga teacher which you have to be to teach power yoga, I am also a fitness instructor and personal trainer. I have used my skill set to create my own version of power yoga. Traditional power yoga would not use weights but I think that they make a fine addition for the advanced practitioner. I have combined a really beneficial fitness class with all of the mindset aspects of yoga. This is why I absolutely love it.

What are the benefits?
There are huge benefits to practicing power yoga on a regular basis. I will list a few below.

  • Increased cardiovascular ability.
  • Increased strength.
  • Increased flexibility.
  • Decreased stress and anxiety.
  • Enhanced sleep.
  • A sense of community.
  • A stronger immune system.
  • Weight-loss (if that is a goal).
  • Better self-image.

Who can do it?
The answer is everyone who would be deemed fit enough by a Doctor. The beauty of Power Yoga is that each person can begin to enjoy these classes with their own body weight and then progress up to weighted as you get stronger. My classes are tailored for the beginner all the way to the advanced practitioner.

When is it?
The classes are currently held every Tuesday evening at 7pm. This is during the lockdown but when we are no longer in lockdown they will be on another evening.

Have a beautiful day.
